Archive Installation | 2011
Water Action is a mixed-media installation work made for the University of Bristol Theatre Collection archive. The installation consists of an archive box with several objects alleging to be documents from a performance called ‘Water Action’, performed by me in 1986. However, this performance never took place as represented. Instead, the site of the performance becomes the imagination of the installation visitor, creating links between and across the documents. Several of the documents in the installation are taken from the process of creating the performance Untitled Piece, whereas other objects are complete fabrications in the style of legitimate performance documents from the archive. By mischievously appropriating the archive’s practices the installation becomes an intervention within it, as well as an example of creative artistic documentation.
Water Action was made as a final-year research project for my BA Drama degree at the University of Bristol, UK. It was exhibited and then accessioned into the University of Bristol Theatre Collection in May 2011 and was presented as an example of creative documentation at the JISC Curating Artistic Research Output (CAiRO) Summer School, University of Bristol in June 2011.
The work is on permanent installation within the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, Bristol, UK and is viewable on request under the reference: BDD/IS/000002.
